A Collaboration Celebrating 50 Years of DFS

It’s been a busy time here at Daniel Heath Studio, and as well as creating a selection of new prints for Christmas (more on that soon) I have been working in collaboration with DFS to style a room featuring one of their latest products, the Chord – a modern leather sofa for the launch of their new Winter 2019 lookbook. To celebrate the launch and the furniture retailer’s 50th anniversary, they invited me and a handful of other design experts to recreate our own #LivingRoomGoals.

I chose the three-seater Chord sofa, from the DFS Iconica range, making an instant impact with its smooth leather, button-back arm detail and sleek shape. I liked the use of leather on the sofa, and imagined how the material would patina with age. I wanted to create a room that would be authentic and built upon nostalgia and memories from far-flung adventures. Just like my own home, the space was filled with collected and treasured artefacts and lots of lovely greenery provided by the beautiful big leaves of Monstera Delicosia and other luscious jungle plants.

The colours in the room help to give it an exotic feel, especially the bold terracotta tones that remind me of travelling in Central America. I brought along a throw from Morocco, a Kantha quilt from India and a mid-century vase from West Germany with those chunky Fat Lava glazes. I printed my Onyx Skyline wallpaper in putty and black to adorn a panel on the wall, and included one of my new Heronry cushions in natural linen. The eclectic look and mix-match of cultures and styles is where home is for me, and the magpie eye of any traveller can provide a room full of stories. Warm, big, earthy tones and big leaf plants give this mood its heart.

I am really pleased with how the room looks, and how it reflects my passion for travel and vintage finds. I really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about DFS along the way – as a craftsman it was great to hear that all of their sofas are handmade to order, many here in the UK, and that they too have their own design studio!

Many thanks to the team at DFS for having me join the celebration.
